Mindfulness and The Default Mode Network
Our brains love to wander. This tendency stems from a specific brain system called the default mode network (DMN). It activates the moment we stop focusing on anything specific. It’s like an engine running in the background, carrying us into memories, daydreams, future anxieties—everywhere but here.
The DMN is part of how we reflect, make plans, and understand our story, but it also pulls us out of the now. It pulls us to focus on the future or the past. It takes ours away from our present moment experiences. It is the ongoing mental activity that we bring with us at all moments.
We have on average 60.000 thoughts per day - yet only 5% of those are focused on the present moment!
Enter mindfulness. Mindfulness lets us take the wheel and steer back into the moment, whether through a deep breath, noticing what’s right in front of us, or simply watching our thoughts go by without getting swept away. With mindfulness, we strengthen our brain’s ability to counterbalance the DMN’s natural pull, allowing us to develop more control over our attention.
The point isn’t to shut off this background buzz but to catch ourselves when we’re drifting and choose to come back to the present moment. It’s a practice that gives us more space and steadiness in a mind that’s naturally always moving.
